Hiking Shoe Review

Prior to our trip to Sedona we were approached by Altra Running and offered shoes to test on the desert trails of the Verde Valley. In doing a little research into Altra we discovered that they have a highly regarded reputation for making outstanding Ultra Marathon and Trail Running shoes. Intrigued by this we accepted their offer and the tested the men’s Altra Superior 2.0 and the ladies Lone Peak 2.5. The Superior 2.0 is designed as a light weight trail running shoe and has won awards as a result of it’s very unique design. The shoes are very light, weighing in at 8.7 ounces. They have reinforced heal and toe cups to guard against damage from…[read more]

Outdoor Gear - Best Cameras

If you believe in the old hiking and backpacking adage; take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time, then you are a trekker after our own heart. And you probably need a good camera. The worst feeling ever is being on your great adventure, seeing the best picture in your mind and not having the right gear to make it happen the way you want to preserve that memory. This is where choosing the right camera is critical. Choosing the right camera for your adventures is no easy task. Cameras are expensive, and if you’re going to be packing them for hiking, camping, or other outdoor activities, you have to consider many things…[read more]

Outdoor Gear Best Backpacks

If you’re like us, you probably spend an incredible amount of time obsessing over the gear you need when you are planning your next adventure. At least as important as the outdoor gear you choose is the pack you get to carry it all. After all, when you’re out on your adventure, your pack is one piece of gear you depend on most to get you and your gear where you want to go. A lot of questions get asked when it’s time to pick the best pack. How long is your trip? What’s your body type? How much can you afford? Is snow involved? What’s your style, how much gear will you be carrying, and is there a chance for bad weather? Knowing the answer to these questions…[read more]

Outdoor Gear - Technology

Some say they seek adventure in the outdoors to escape the trappings of technology, society, and the everyday. We get it. But in a way, advances in technology allow us to truly be free. Want to get lost? Only when we have a solid GPS tracking system can we feel safe enough to fearlessly go out and get lost in the deep backcountry, knowing that we can always find our way home. Want to head outside, into the wild, to be alone and seek respite from others? Technology can provide you with the added peace and security knowing that, if needed, you can send a message to a friend or loved one, or easily engage search and rescue with a touch of a button if things go bad…[read more]

Fall Hiking Gear

Looking for information on fall hiking and outdoor gear? No offense to the other seasons, but Autumn is the best time to hike throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere. Fall hiking offers the most stunning views of colorful foliage and natural beauty on earth. Not only are there less people on the trails, with summer vacations ending, but there are often more wildlife sightings with animals coming down from the mountains for easier water sources and to bulk up on food before the long winter. Even though there is generally less volatility in weather during the Autumn months, there are still challenges for hikers to consider as they plan for their adventure…[read more]

Outdoor Gear - Best Tents

The right tent is your home away from home when camping. Choosing the right tent can make the difference between enjoying your camping experience and making you want to immediately seek out the nearest La Quinta. There are so many options out there, classified by season, sleeping capacity, and ideal use. Questions have to be asked. Are you backpacking? Car camping? Is it you, you and a friend, or your entire extended family? Are you big people, say like 6’5”, or small, like 5’2”? Where are you going and what month is it? Is it going to be hot? Cold? Rainy? It all matters. Books have been written about choosing the right tent for all occasions, so to keep things moving along…[read more]

Outdoor Gear - Best Insulated Jackets

You want to be warm when the temps start to drop? I mean, do you really want to be warm? Do you want to be warm, but are too scared to sweat so much that you start to freeze again? Yeah, that happens. Then the answer is to layer up properly. Base layer. Insulating layer. Outer layer. Put it on when you need and shed it when you don’t. All are important, but the insulating layer is where it’s at. Insulated jackets are designed fit pretty snug to the body, protecting you from the cold outside air and keeping your body heat close to the skin. The secret to choosing the right insulating layer is to know what you are doing and where you are going, then getting one that is versatile enough…[read more]
